Before I met Mr Mokhtar - Mr M for the sake of brevity - 2 years ago in Sec 2, I was nearly failing in my English marks at about a C6. Then, I was introduced to Mr M. along with my brother, by my cousin. Since then, we've had plenty of grammar exercises as well as vocabulary exercises meant to shape up our English proficiency. Mr Mokhtar gives interesting lessons and will focus on any area of English you think you are weaker in. The topics he gives for compositions are slightly more challenging, but unique and interesting. However, when the examinations draw closer, he will give proper, exam-like composition topics. He also has a wide array of books that he lends to students to help expand their vocabulary and possibly give inspiration to their writing. Sometimes, he will give fun activities for his students to do, when they need to unwind from the stress of an enormous workload from school, which increases their vocabulary, grammar and general knowledge at the same time. Indeed, Mr Mokhtar is the ideal tutor for students to learn English (and incidentally, get an A* in English for their PSLE!).

Before I met Mr. Mokhtar, I didn't even know what SAT was. The only thing I knew about the test was that I needed a good score to pursue my university education. That was the reason I joined the 7-day SAT course in Jakarta conducted by him. The first time I took the simulation test on the course, I scored only 1500 and it was very hard for me, especially the essay and the reading part. I got only 2+1 for my essay. Over the next 6 days, Mr. Mokhtar taught us the strategies to do SAT, mostly for the parts that we were not very good at : writing (especially the essay ) & reading (the vocab!). The way he taught us was clear and fun. I did enjoy the lesson and it was very useful. In just ONE week, my SAT score jumped from 1500 to 1700. I even improved to a 4+4 for my essay! It's no longer 2+1. My reading & math score also improved. Mr. Mokhtar knows all the tips about the test and is willing to share all with his students. Well, 1700 is not my ultimate goal. I need to continue to improve, and I'm still working hard to achieve my goal. It's so sad that I don't live in the same country with Mr. Mokhtar. If I were in Singapore, I would take more SAT lessons with him without a doubt. I would recommend Mr. Mokhtar to all students! Thank you for everything, Mr. M!

I joined Mr Mokhtar’s tuition in secondary 4, just a few weeks before my O levels. Back then, i was having problems with my previous tuition teacher and decided to try out Mr Mokhtar’s lessons. Time wasn’t on my side, getting a C5 for English and E8 for Lit during prelims were definitely not encouraging. I didn’t get my hopes up.

However, having lessons with Mr Mokhtar every week not only improved my grades, it motivated me to study. Sometimes he would crack a joke in the middle of a discussion, just to liven things up. He also used different tools to help us work during his class, instead of the boring pen and paper. These are just some of the things that make his lessons interesting and enjoyable. Over time, i did not find it a chore going for his lessons; in fact, I was always looking forward to the next lesson.

I joined Mr Mokhtar’s tuition back in Secondary school as I was not really performing well in my Literature and English Classes. Without a doubt, he has made a profound impact in my learning of the English language. Not only did my grades improve but I have also found that skills gained from his classes are still relevant in my higher education, be it essays or project work. His classes were always interactive, fun and definitely conducive for creative thinking. He always sought to inspire me to think out of the box and snap me out of my rigid thinking which was prevalent then. My initial intention for joining this tuition with Mr. Mokhtar was to supplement my study of English Literature for the GCE O Levels, but I have emerged from every tuition session more inspired and motivated in not just my academics but as an individual as well. Unlike all the tuition teachers that I have come across, Mr Mokhtar is interested in the academic progress of his student but the aspect of character development too - he is eager to complement schoolwork with readings and other materials that will not just improve the student's ability in that subject but also stimulate his or her interest in it. In my case, he has introduced me to writings of several writers and philosophers that have greatly increased my knowledge of the world and my passion for the humanities. I was in need of tuition badly and had no more time as my IELTS was just around the corner when I stumbled upon Mr. Mokhtar's profile on the internet. Before I became a student of Mr. Mokhtar’s, I did just enough to get by in my lower sec years. With the stakes raised, I needed to know more and a B4 would not be enough to prepare me for the ‘O’ Levels. I asked Mr. Mokhtar to be my tutor. Upon obtaining an A2 for English in the ‘N’ Levels, I experienced firsthand how Mr. Mokhtar’s methods helped put me on the right, and better track to the ‘O’ Levels in 2007. I continued with him for the final stretch, and there was no room for new errors and old habits. With thorough practice and new English study habits in my arsenal, I was ready for the ‘O’ Levels. Upon receiving my result slip a few months later, tears of joy streamed down my face as I had received an Á2 for English.

Apart from studies, Mr. Mokhtar and I converse a lot during our sessions with topics ranging from school and personal issues to politics and global events. When I first met Mokhtar, my grades were at a disastrous low, and it was not helping that I had just changed school systems (from a Singapore system to an international one). The first couple of lessons were about getting to know each other, because Mokhtar believed that it's better to get to know a person first. He believed in building a personal relationship to enable a more comfortable environment to study in. This helped a lot because I felt comfortable when I needed to ask questions, not fearing a cranky old man to tell me that tuition time was tuition time. Regular updates were also requested from him and this enabled me to remember that i actually had home work! I am a foreign student in Singapore. The greatest problem for me is English language. I found Mr Mokhtar through a friend. To me, Mr. Mokhtar has the power to let you feel free to talk to him. Mokhtar has been my English tutor for more then 4 months now and my command of the language has improved tremendously.  I started off as an unconfident writer and often confused about the use of this lingo but he gave me continual encouragement to write, read and speak the language.  My improvement is all rounded, not only on basic grammar, but also on word choice, writing style and organization of a piece writing. 

 Mokhtar has a wide knowledge on various topic of interest, we have talked about and he has recommended me several books on various topics: business; current affairs; religion; science and many more.  I have acquired knowledge on these topics and learnt good English at the same time; my lessons are ever enriching.

 I would strongly recommend Mokhtar as a tutor, especially for students who needs higher level of guidance on the use of the English language because of his experience and extensive knowledge on a good number of topics which enables him to point out other improvement needed rather than just basic grammar.  For other levels, I would still recommend Mokhtar as learning good English should starts early.
